Pumeza Matshikiza

Soprano

Highlights of South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza’s recent seasons include her house and role debuts as both Bess and Serena Porgy and Bess at Theater an der Wien; her highly acclaimed role debut in the title role Rusalka Theater Klagenfurt, a role she also sang at Opera National du Rhin in Nicola Raab’s production with Anthony Hermus conducting, and at Vlaanderen Opera in the new production by Norwegian choreographer Alan Lucien Øyen broadcast on Operavision. She made her US debut as Mimì La Bohème at Dallas Opera, and further appeared in the role at Semperoper Dresden and at Staatstheater Wiesbaden. Miss Matshikiza also appeared as Eve in the world premiere of Giorgio Battistelli’s CO2 at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, staged by Robert Carsen.

In 2021/22 season Miss Matshikiza makes her house and role debut as Fox The Cunning Little Vixen at English National Opera, and remains to appear as Moira The Handmaid’s Tale. In her native South Africa she gives recitals in Johannesburg and Durban, and returns to Europe to appear with WDR Funkhausorchester in the New Year’s Eve concert at the Essen Philharmonie.

“…while Pumeza Matshikiza won full sympathy with her heartrending, velvet-toned Serena.” Moore Parker, The Opera Critic, 18 October 2020

“A specialist in Puccini’s work, she stands out in the role of Mimi as the star of this recent Bohème, produced in 2014. We call her Pumeza , this golden voice, with a striking power and timbre, capable of leaving all languid, up there on the archi-known but still hallucinating theme of Mimi.” François Cavaillès, Anaclase, 1 February 2016

“Pumeza Matshikiza’s Rusalka was an exotic, almost feral creature, shattering stereotypes of the fluttery fairy usually associated with the role. This physical otherworldliness was also found in her dark, scintillating voice, which demands a second hearing to get its full measure. When she was to be released to pursue love in the mortal world, she sang a radiant ‘Song to the Moon’ in a mermaid’s tail while Ježibaba painted her face gold (as she first did her own).” Rick Perdian, Seen and Heard International, 21 October, 2019

“South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza made her American debut Friday night as Mimi, with a distinctively textured voice and tremendous vocal power…Matshikiza soared sweetly in “Mi chiamano Mimì…”  Wayne Lee Gay, Texas Classical Review, 16 March 2019
