Aaron Blake

Tenor

Aaron Blake’s current season engagements include his return to the Metropolitan Opera of New York as Sam Clay (c) The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay in the company’s world premiere, and Remendado Carmen. He travels to Israeli Opera to revive his performance as Tamino Die Zauberflöte and remains to make his role debut as Narraboth Salome under the baton of Dan Ettinger. As Artist in Residence at King University, Mr. Blake continues facilitating masterclasses and community engagement performances throughout the 2025/2026 academic year.

A significant feature of recent seasons includes his performances as Michel in Martinu’s Julietta: first in Czech in his role debut in the US premiere in 2019 at Carnegie Hall under the baton of Leon Botstein, with whom he revived the role Bard Music Festival in summer 2025. Following the US premiere, he sang the role in German at Oper Frankfurt in his European debut, and in spring 2025 he sang the role in French at Opera de Nice. He revives the role again in future seasons.

For JULIETTE in Czech at BARD, August 2025:

“…and a meeting of choruses, orchestras and a near perfect group of soloists.  First of whom was the only “real” person, played by the remarkable Aaron Blake. Virtually never leaving the stage, he was not an operatic hero. He was baffled, humorous, a victim of Julietta and the townsfolk. He had to play ignorant and disoriented and bewildered, both frightened and–strangest of all–sucked into the dreams themselves. Mr Blake’s tenor was always clear, always dramatic in the changing drama itself.  Yes, he is an opera singer, but I was reminded of Alfred Drake, the great Broadway tenor who could easily have been at the Met.” Harry Rollick, ConcertoNet, August 17, 2025

“Blake, who sang the role of Michel at the Carnegie Hall concert performance of Julietta in 2019, returns to it here with great energy. With a buttery, supple tenor sound, he has both the dramatic ability and the vocal stamina for this role; he sounded remarkably fresh, even as the performance approached the four-hour mark, and his final mad scene was especially gripping.”  Gabriele Ferrari, New York Observer, August 20, 2025

“…the Bard cast played every moment as genuine and vital, especially tenor Aaron Blake, who sang Michel in the 2019 Carnegie performance under Botstein. Blake etched his final scene — as he debates whether to heed Julietta’s call to return — with blood-chilling realism.”  David Patrick Sterns, Classical Voice North America, August 22, 2025

For JULIETTE in French at Opera de Nice, 2025

“Michel, interprété par le ténor américain Aaron Blake, incarne avec brio ce personnage en quête d’absolu, naviguant entre réalité et illusion. Sa performance, tant vocale que scénique, est remarquable, notamment dans les moments de tension lyrique.” Emmanuel Andrieu, Classique News, 16 March 2025

For LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN at The Metropolitan Opera, 2024

“As the Four Servants, the comedic antics of tenor Aaron Blake were a standout, most of all in Act 2 where his “Jour et nuit je me mets en quarte”, a waggish song about his talents, was a showstopper.” Susan Stempleski, Bachtrack, September 26, 2024

“…the four servants interpreted by tenor Aaron Blake could not have been more diverse. The tenor showcased his comic prowess, particularly in his portrayal of Franz, Antonia’s swirling and whimsical housekeeper.” Edward Sava-Segal, Seen and Heard International, September 27, 2024

For DAPHNE at Carnegie Hall New York, 2o23

“The Leukippos, Aaron Blake, has sung Tamino, but his clear, focused voice seemed capable of larger roles, and his Leukippos was youthful, ringing, faithful to the text, and splendid, including that high C.”  Robert Levine,  Classics Today, March 23, 2023

“Strauss contrasts her suitors utilizing a lyric tenor for Leukippos and a more heroic tenor for Apollo.  Aaron Blake as Leukippos reaffirmed his status as one of our most versatile and accomplished young lyric tenors.  The rapt way he listened to the orchestral passages onstage revealed deep sensitivity and response to the music before his character had a line to sing.  Blake also reacted to the other singers with dramatic intention.  His clear, well-produced tenor was incisive with many moments of sweetness and beauty.” Eli Jacobson, Parterre Box, March 27, 2023

For AKHNATEN at The Metropolitan Opera of New York, 2022

“The choreography, though, does have its awe-inspiring moments, such as when juggling pins fly around Aaron Blake, as the High Priest of Amon, who — despite the risk of being hit by one — doesn’t even suggest a flinch while singing with a full-bodied tenor sound.”  Joshua Barone, New York Times, May 20, 2022

“The wonderful cast is rounded out by Aaron Blake, with his bright tenor voice, as the High Priest…” George Weinhouse, May 26, 2022, Broadway World
