Jelena Kordic
Croatian mezzo-soprano Jelena Kordic’s recent season highlights include Quickly Falstaff at National Taichung Theater in Taiwan, followed by her return to La Monnaie in a role debut as Wellgunde Götterdämmerung. She closed the season in her debut as Amneris Aidaat Lithuanian National Theatre, where she also appeared as Nicklausse in a new production of Les contes d’Hoffmann. Further engagements this season include Hermia A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Lithuanian National Theater; and in a future season Judith Bluebeard’s Castle in a staged performance, and Venus Tannhäuser.
In 2022, she began her journey into the German dramatic repertoire, debuting as Fricka and Rossweisse Das Rheingold, Fricka Die Walküre, Second Norn and Wellgunde Götterdämmerung in Nationaltheater Mannheim’s Ring cycle, conducted by Alexander Soddy. These performances were later reprised at the Daegu Opera Festival in South Korea as part of the company’s international tour. She appeared as Wellgunde Das Rheingold at La Monnaie, part of Romeo Castellucci’s new Ring cycle conducted by Alain Altinoglu, and sang Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the UNAM Philharmonic in Mexico City.
“Jelena Kordic accompanies him devotedly, yet also assertively, as his muse Nicklausse. She effortlessly adopts casually masculine features, and with her long mane, she quickly transforms into the emancipated woman who captivates Hoffmann. Her mezzo-soprano has color and volume…” Dr Helmut Pitch, Opera-Online.com, 30 April, 2025
“…while the Composer, wonderfully and openly embodied by Jelana Kordić, feels that her work is not being taken seriously due to the cheerful dance piece.” Patrick Erb, Concerti.de, 24 April, 2024
“…Jelena Kordić is a knight of the highest caliber, as elegant on stage as she is vocally assured. Accustomed to trouser roles (Cherubino, Hänsel, Herodias’s page…), the Croatian mezzo-soprano is nonetheless a Mariandel of assertive femininity. ” Peter Verlack, Wanderersite, com, 7 September, 2021
