Conductor

Judith Yan’s 25/26 season includes her debut at Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo conducting Giselle alongside an opera Gala concert, a concert production of Tosca, programmes comprising Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Saskatoon Symphony in Canada, a return to Jacobs School of Music for mixed program of Janes, Balanchine, and Taylor, and a debut at Opera Grand Rapids with Madama Butterfly. Her performance of Sasha Jane’s Nutcracker has been featured in a PBS documentary to be broadcast across the US this autumn.

 

Recent performances include Don Giovanni and Suor Angelica with Opera Omaha, Madama Butterfly with New Orleans Opera, Nutcracker (Janes) at Jacobs School of Music Opera and Ballet School at Indiana University, The Rape of Lucretia with San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program, La Bayadère and Swan Lake with Korean National Ballet, and Don Quixote with Hong Kong Ballet. Since 2021, Maestro Yan has enjoyed a close association with Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, conducting nine programmes in a variety of repertoire including Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Dvorak, Gipps, Richter, and Copland.

 

Equally adept at conducting symphony, opera, and ballet, Maestro Yan has held Staff Conductor positions at San Francisco Opera, Canadian Opera Company, and National Ballet of Canada. A dedicated supporter of new works, she has conducted numerous world-premieres including An American Dream (Perla/Murphy) at Seattle Opera, Dracula (Pastor/Kilar) at West Australian Ballet, as well as February (Kaminsky/Moore) and Ours (Estacio/Chafe) for Opera on the Avalon in St Johns, Newfoundland, where she is Music Director and Principal Conductor.
