Kihun Yoon

Baritone

S. Korean baritone Kihun Yoon begins the current season 2025-26 in his second year as a member of the principal ensemble at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, This season in Karlsruhe he appears as Alfio/Tonio Cavalleria Rusticana/I Pagliacci, the title role Eugene Onegin, Marcello La Boheme, Telramund Lohengrin, and the title role Rigoletto.  Last season he appeared in the title role Nabucco, Thésée Phèdre, Pascoe The Wreckers and Scarpia Tosca.

In Oldenburg he excelled in the roles of Verdi and Wagner, and also sang Frank Die Tote Stadt,  Borilée Les Boreades, Balstrode Peter Grimes and Marco Gianni Schicchi. He won exceptional reviews for his appearances as Alberich, Wotan, Wanderer and Gunther in Der Ring des Nibelungen. He returned as a guest artist to Los Angeles Opera, where he was previously a member of the Domingo-Thornton young artist program in 2016/17, to sing the role of Germont La Traviata.

“It is in the second act that Verdi’s creation becomes a heavyweight battle of wills, spurred by the introduction of the opera’s formidable baritone adversary, Giorgio Germont. Yoon’s performance provided that presence: self-consciously dignified in his demeanor and stentorian in vocal magnitude.” Jim Farber, San Francisco Classical Voice, April 9, 2024

“As père Germont, Kihun Yoon’s gruff tone gradually melted into honey during the course of his duet with Violetta, genuinely moved by her sacrifice, and his two arias were vociferously and enthusiastically received.” Truman C. Wang, ClassicalVoice.org, April 6, 2024

“The most vocal achievement came from Kihun Yoon as secretary and first hand of the governor. He becomes even more violent in his care and loyalty to his friend when he learns about the alleged infidelity of his wife and Riccardo. What was once tender regard changes to the infernal will to destroy: Renato becomes the leader of the conspirators. In terms of voice, the virile baritone Kihun Yoon masters this process of change very convincingly…”
