This year, Hungarian American tenor Chris Mosz appeared at Opera Santa Barbara as Tonio La Fille du Regiment, winning an INDY Award from the Santa Barbara Independent for his performance. In the summer he joins the Camerino Festival in Italy and returns to the US for Opera Modesto’s L’Elisir d’amore as Nemorino. In his homecoming performances at Tulsa Opera, Chris revives the role of Frederic Pirates of Penzance.
In 2022 he graduated from London’s Royal College of Music in the UK with First Class Honours, and travelled to Austria to join the Vienna Opera Academy for Ferrando Cosi fan tutte before returning to the UK for Hurn Court Opera’s production of Don Pasquale as Ernesto. Wexford Opera Festival welcomed him as Dudo Armida and Tito The Masters, a world premiere with libretto by Colm Toibin; he returned the following year for Tonio La Fille du Regiment, a role he later sang on his return to the US at Livermore Valley Opera. Last season, Chris returned to Central City Opera for the role of Frederic The Pirates of Penzance, and made his debut in the role of Elvino La Sonnambula in the original keys with West Bay Opera.
“Mosz’s tone and careful phrasing recalls Nicolai Gedda, paired with a robust, masculine presence and posture that brings to mind Richard Tucker. In ‘Ah, mes amis’ he nailed all of the nine high Cs, earning a lengthy applause… and took an encore-again hitting all nine with a nice ring and confidence.” James Taylor, Opera Magazine, August 2025
“Her Elvino, tenor Chris Mosz, was making his WBO debut, having recently wowed audiences as Tonio in Livermore Valley Opera’s The Daughter of the Regiment. He is also well equipped to handle this tough role. Mosz’s voice is large, if a little nasal in quality, but he handled the runs and ornamentation in his part delicately. He mixed his head and chest voice in the highest notes, almost a necessity in this repertoire, allowing him to preserve the longer line and come down from the heights gracefully.” Michael Zwiebach, San Francisco Critical Voice, February 25, 2025
“Chris Mosz’s tenor is so high-set that it seems like he is singing downward on notes above the staff. This serves him well later, as Elvino is destined to suffer much grief and betrayal. I liked him best, however, in “Son geloso del zeffiro errante,” a delicate duet of forgiveness in which he and Drever travel long a capella passages together.” Michael J Vaughn, The Almanac, February 20, 2025
“Tenor Chris Mosz in the role of Tonio made for an ardent lover. He used his sweet-sounding, lyrically strong voice to successfully define his passionate character. His voice also possesses an impressive degree of versatility, which allowed him to effortlessly extend the vocal line and move gracefully into the upper register. His aria, “pour mon âme quel destin!,” known for its high tessitura with its succession of high C’s, was taken in stride.” Alan Neilson, Operawire, 10 November, 2023
“Chris Mosz verfügt als Tonio über einen hellen Tenor, der sich in seiner großen Arie problemlos zu den zahlreichen hohen Cs emporschwingt und auch ansonsten mit weicher Stimmführung tenoralen Schmelz verströmen lässt. So wird es nachvollziehbar, wieso Marie ihr Herz an ihn verloren hat.” Thomas Molke, Online Musik Magazin, 25 October 2023
