Kenneth Kellogg Shines in the Historic Premiere of Edmond Dédé’s Morgiane
A long-lost masterpiece has finally come to life, and Kenneth Kellogg’s commanding performance in Edmond Dédé’s Morgiane has left an indelible mark on this historic moment in American classical music.
Following its long-overdue return to New Orleans’ St. Louis Cathedral—where Dédé was baptized—the opera made its staged debut at Washington D.C.’s Lincoln Theatre with Opera Lafayette on February 3rd, culminating in its final performance on February 7th. After 138 years of obscurity, Morgiane has reclaimed its place in the operatic canon, and Kenneth’s portrayal of the formidable Sultan Kourouschah played a pivotal role in this long-awaited revival.
Critics lauded Kenneth’s performance, highlighting his commanding vocal presence and dramatic intensity:
“As the kidnapping sultan, Kenneth Kellogg was resplendent in velvety robes of red and gold, and his Wagnerian bass voice fit the domineering character well.”
— Alexandra Svokos, OperaWire
“Bass Kenneth Kellogg, a D.C. native long familiar to local audiences, made an imposing foil to Williams as the Sultan. His resonant voice displayed not only virile strength but legato grace…“
— Charles T. Downey, Washington Classical Review
As a performer celebrated for his depth and artistry, Kenneth brought both vocal power and nuance to his portrayal, embodying the grandeur and authority of the Sultan while maintaining a striking musicality.
More than just a premiere, these performances marked a cultural homecoming—a long-overdue recognition of Edmond Dédé, the first known Black American composer to write a full-length opera. As audiences and critics alike reflect on the impact of Morgiane, Kenneth’s artistry stands at the heart of this historic milestone.
With Morgiane now firmly on the map, the journey to securing Dédé’s rightful place in the operatic tradition continues. But for those who witnessed this revival, the power of his music—and Kenneth Kellogg’s unforgettable performance—will resonate long into the future.
